THE COACHING MODEL
A differential advantage vs
other sports:
INCLUSIVE

The wide variation of skills
and physical requirements
needed for the Rugby
game means that there is
an opportunity for
individuals of every shape,
size and ability to
participate at all levels

THE 300 RUGBY Academy,
is dedicated to the belief that sport is a key educational tool, helping
young people grow physically, intellectually and spiritually.
A unique complement to their
curricula :
OUR TRADITIONS
WHY THE 300 ?

    In the Battle of
    Thermopylae of 480 BC
    an alliance of Greek city-
    states fought the
    invading Persian army in
    the mountain pass of
    Thermopylae.
Vastly outnumbered, the 300 Spartan of history.
The resistance of the Spartan-led army offered
soldiers, held back the 2,000,000 strong Persian
army’s advance for two days.
Leonidas, the Spartan King commanding the
army, held up the enemy in one of the most
famous last stands of history. The resistance of
the Spartan-led army offered Athens the
invaluable opportunity to make battle
preparations and decisively defeat the Persians
at the battle of Salamis. The performance of the
defenders at the battle of Thermopylae is often
used as an example
of the advantages of
disciplined training, proper equipment and
strategic use of terrain to maximise an
army's potential, as well as a symbol of
courage against incredibly overwhelming
odds.
There is an epitaph  on a monument at
site of the battle, to the Spartans:
    Go tell the Spartans, stranger
    passing by,that here, obedient to
    their laws, we lie.

Diēnékēs was a Spartan officer present at the
Battle of Thermopylae. He was acclaimed the
bravest of all the 300 Spartiates selected to fight
in that battle. Herodotus related the following
anecdote about Diēnékēs:
"Although extraordinary valor was displayed by
the entire corps of Spartans and Thespians,
yet
bravest of all was declared the Spartan
Diēnékēs
. It is said that on the eve of battle, he
was told by a native of Trachis that the Persian
archers were so numerous that, their arrows
would blot out the sun. Diēnékēs, however,
undaunted by this prospect, remarked with a
laugh,
'Good. Then we will fight in the
shade
'"

again and again.
Techniques & Tactics

We strive to make simple things in a
perfect form

Proper technique is always important.
Writing an essay, making an argument or
resolving a conflict technique can be crucial. In
rugby technique is especially important because
doing it right , means a safer game for all
participants.
Technique is also important because the teams
are made up of so many different body shapes
and sizes that to do it right is the key to dealing
with opponents who may have a natural
advantage.
Technique increases the level of possible play
and, if taught correctly at an early age, will
never be forgotten.
Plus, doing things well is always more fun. Thus,
your teenager will learn correct technique for the
following:

Running (w/o ball, acceleration
/deceleration, change direction, change
step, defense running, supporting the
carrier, switches)
Kicks (post, box, drop, hat, rastron,
dribbling, zepelling
Handling (orthodox, reverse, long, pop,
from the floor, dummy, pick-up the ball,
save the ball and stand-up
Catching (pass, kick)
Contact (w/o ball, approach to contact,
impact on your feet, impact with the
floor, hit and turn
Tackle (frontal, lateral, from behind,
upper tackle)
Hand-off
Mauling
Rucking
Scrumming
Line
Tactics (backs, forwards, connecting)
Positional Play (what will happen next?)

A Positive Coach is a “Double-Goal” Coach :

Winning (Important)
Teaching Life Lessons (More
Important)

3 Principles of Positive Coaching

  1. Honouring the Game – Gets to the
    ROOTS of Positive Play… Respect
    for :Rules, Opponents, Officials,
    Teammates, Self
  2. Redefining Winner – ELM Tree of
    Mastery:     Effort, Learning,
    Mistakes OK
  3. Filling the Emotional Tank: Magic
    Ratio (5 positives : 1 Criticism)

  1. It’s in playing rugby that we learn how to
    overcome Adversity and Fear.  Sometimes
the game can get tough, and we might
have to make a hard call, but we do this
    with respect and good sportsmanship.
  2. Teamwork becomes a creed. We learn
that the more we give the more we
receive and the importance of working
without recognition for the good of the
team. Remembering always to put values
    and principles above personalities. Our
    individual perfomance depends upon unity.
  3. We Respect our opponent, because we
are sure that without them we cannot
play. Best friends have often met on a
Rugby field and frequently playing for
    opposite sides.
  4. We redefine the verb To Win as: to give
our 100%. The results will come as a
    consequence.
  5. To be a “good man or woman” is more
important than to be “the MVP”. For that
reason our MVP will be the young man or
woman that did the best for the team, not
    necessarily the best player.
  6. We consider that every rugby player is an
    athlete not vice versa
  7. We have no room for “stars”, the sky has
    it.
  8. We, the rugby players, assume defeat
with dignity and enjoy triumph with
    simplicity .
  9. A Rugbier has to take special care of the
Jersey that he or she wears; not the
jersey itself which, in truth, belongs to him
or her, but the colors and the shield that
give it meaning, that is common
patrimony, our heritage, forged with many
    years of effort and discipline.
  10. Our behavior honors Rugby values and
traditions on and off the field
  11. Rugby is a school of life, where we  learn
life values and principles, while enjoying a
    fantastic experience and making lifelong
    FRIENDS
  12. Love of the Game - Rugby engenders
an abiding passion - an intensely personal
pleasure in playing or watching. It creates
an unaffected joy. It’s love who inspired
    our behavior and performance. We
    choose inspiration over motivation;
intuition over intelligence, and the wink of
an eye as the best way of
    communication.

Exploiting our full potential

Rugby is a tough sport and so the training is
extensive. The most important thing is to make
sure not to over estimate a teen’s physical
abilities. The exercise habits that they develop in
this transitional phase, however, will stay with
them for the rest of their lives and if they learn
to push themselves to perform at this age, they
are unlikely to ever fall into bad health habits.
Exercise at this age will also encourage teens to
be confident in their body types and not to
develop body image issues which are becoming
more prevalent everyday.Thus, the training
sessions will encompass the following:

  • Speed
  • Strength
  • Agility
  • Coordination
  • Timing
  • Flexibility
